If Frieza, Mastermind is in play, Tug of War can still trigger when taken as damage because damage is inherently discarded. If Tug of War is used to banish Frieza, Tug of War itself will be discarded as damage (you could banish it for Endurance regardless of whether it is used to banish Frieza).[source]
